Dealer Notes

Small crossovers are big news and the Jeep Cherokee wants to be a bigger player in the segment. What the 2019 Cherokee gets is a partial redesign, a new engine and the same off-roadworthiness that makes a Jeep a Jeep. While its not what youd call all-new, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is maybe half-new. The chassis, or basic body-in-white, stays the same aft of the A-pillars, the doors stay the same and two engines stay the same. Its not just the grill thats new up there, its the entire structure from the A-pillar forward, including the extruded aluminum crumple zones and the engine cradle. It has some nice aluminum structure to meet those extreme offset collisions, now, too. The headlights are more compact and efficient LEDs. And it gets a new 2.0-liter turbo four driving either the front or all four wheels. The new direct-injection 2.0 turbo four makes 270 hp and 295 lb ft of torque. You can also get a 2.4-liter four making 180 hp and 170 lb ft or the tried-and-true 271-hp, 239-lb-ft 3.2-liter V6. All engines come mated to a nine-speed automatic. And the Cherokee offers something its competitors cant match: off-road performance thatll get you over the Rubicon and back. While you can get a Cherokee in front-wheel drive, Jeeps single biggest selling point is its 4x4 capability. Four-wheel drive comes in three levels: Active Drive I offers a single-speed transfer case that can send power to the rear wheels when needed. Active Drive II offers a two-speed power takeoff unit and low-range gear reduction. Active Drive Lock is the same as II but adds a mechanically locking rear differential. You can get up to a 51.2:1 crawl ratio, which means you can creep up or down really steep stuff. On top of those choices you can get Selec-Terrain traction control that adjusts the amount of slip it allows to one of five settings: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and Rock. And there is hill-descent control to help ease you down really steep trails by automatically grabbing individual disc brakes, and Selec-speed control to automatically set the speed at which you creep about. Increased use of aluminum throughout, including an aluminum hood as well as a hands-free power tailgate made of plastic composite, mean 150 pounds of weight savings over the previous Cherokee. Previous Jeep Cherokees were no-frills off-road vehicles that provided little more than basic transportation when you got them on the pavement. The Cherokee is wholly different. It's a small crossover SUV. And while it still has a fair amount of all-terrain ability, this new Jeep is more remarkable for its spacious and attractively furnished cabin, one of the most accommodating rear seats of any compact crossover in this price range, pleasant ride and smooth V6 engine. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels and all-season tires, air-conditioning, keyless remote entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a 60/40-split folding and reclining rear seat, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a six-speaker audio system with a 5-inch touchscreen interface, USB/iPod integration, an auxiliary audio input and an SD card reader. The Latitude adds roof rails, foglights, body-color door handles and mirrors, privacy-tinted glass, LED interior lighting, a folding front passenger seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, vinyl trim on the door panels and a 115-volt outlet. The off-road-themed Trailhawk is 4WD only and comes with slightly wider 17-inch wheels and all-terrain tires; unique suspension tuning (aimed at making the Jeep more capable in the dirt); a rear locking differential; functional skid plates and tow hooks; unique fascia trim and side moldings; upgraded instrumentation; the 8.4-inch touchscreen and satellite radio. The rear seat has recline and fore-and-aft adjustment, and the high-mounted bench supports adults' thighs without pushing their heads into the rafters. This is one of the better backseats in the compact crossover class. Occupants' comfort comes at the expense of cargo capacity, though. With its rear seats folded, the Jeep tops out at 54.9 cubic feet. Standard safety equipment on all Cherokees includes antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is backed by the nine-speed automatic with active Drive I is your basic light-duty 4WD system (basically what most shoppers think of as all-wheel drive), and it's just fine if you merely need a little extra traction in winter snowstorms. The 3.2-liter V6 engine makes an impressive 271 horsepower and delivers that power in a smooth, refined manner via an all-new nine-speed automatic transmission. The new V6 engine gives the Cherokee a relaxed, refined demeanor not found in any SUV with a four-cylinder engine. There's plenty of power here, and the new nine-speed automatic provides smooth upshifts. When using the 4x4 capabilities, there are 3 to choose from (Jeep Active Drive I, II, and Jeep Active Drive Lock) yaw correction is automatic, there are single ort two speed power transfer units, and a driveline neutral switch for towing your Cherokee behind an RV, plus a crawl ratio of 48 or 56 to one depending on the engine your Cherokee has.

  • Would I buy again?

Yes, and in fact did! We loved my Cherokee so much that when my husbands car died, he bought a Cherokee, too! We live in a hilly area, get fair amount of snow, so 4WD is more than just nice, it can be essential for getting to work. This Cherokee is the most comfortable vehicle weve had, and we just love the bluetooth connectivity. The backup camera is so clear and easy to use. Do yourself a favor and take one for a test drive.

I am leasing my 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk edition. I absolutely love this vehicle. This vehicle dominates snowy road conditions. Except for needing to re-lubricate the sunroof seal I have not had one single issue with this vehicle. I get compliments all the time on it. No regrets with this choice.
  • WE LOVE OUR 2017 JEEP CHEROKEE!

We purchased our 2017 Jeep Cherokee about 4 months ago now and are very happy with our Jeep. The Cherokee rides well, the suspension does a great job of absorbing large bumps, the leather seats on our North addition are very comfortable, the interior is very roomy, we love everything about our Cherokee. I am pleasantly surprised with the power of the 4 cylinder engine, dont get me wrong it is not going to win any races, but the 4 cylinder engine in combination with the 9 speed automatic transmission does a good job overall, the 9 speed automatic transmission does good job of selecting the proper gear for the acceleration and road speed,it keeps the engine speed low to save fuel when its possible and appropriate. I was reluctant to buy the 4 cylinder engine at 1st, but since I was not crazy about the idea that the 6 cylinder engine has the start stop feature, shutting the engine at every stop and restarting again, I keep my cars a long time, the car I traded in on the Jeep, I purchased new and was 23 years old when we traded it in and I think the start stop feature of the 6 cylinder version might be trouble down the line? So I opted for the 4 cylinder engine, since the Cherokee 4 cylinder engine does NOT have the start stop feature and could not be happier with the 4 cylinder Cherokee. I m very happy that the Jeep Cherokee was built in Ohio, with a high U.S. parts content, that is a big plus in my book. Thank you Chrysler for making such a great small SUV, me and my wife could not be happier with our Jeep Cherokee, North edition, 4X4.
